Experimental Sound [2]

This are a number different sounds that could possibly relate to may piece.

Brazilian rain forest Birds

Wind howling

Brush strokes is a really import sound i would like incorporate due to the wild brush strokes you see in the image

After watching this video I will definitely being trying this technique out in the recording studio (Flapping Bird wings)

Spray can mixing ball sound effect

I really liked this link of use different noises from one object and layering the individual noise together  to create one entire piece.

Reflection Photography [3]

1st photograph out of five.

This is one out of my five series of my picture i took to represent the change in technology and how almost everything we use or need to know our smart phones are able to provide us with the answer. This process was really just trial and error until i had the right position of the map and phone itself, by keeping the camera in position whilst taking a pic of the phone with the map and one without. I used black and white to represent the map to be old and the phone new.

For the four remaining pictures I am planning to use an old camera, newspaper, letter envelope and a group of batteries which will all have the same style.

Experimental Sound

My Interpretation of The Image

“Jean-Michel Basquiat 1981”
Fallen Angel -
according to religious views are those that are banished from Heaven

When I was given this image to use it was quite a shock first time looking at it, I did not really know
how to respond to it.  From what I have gathered from the picture so far as my own interpretation it seem that the image was drawn of a wall to possibly to symbolise the street art culture. In terms of the location of the image to me it could be in a poor community or some sort of shanty town from the use of bold colours and eccentric brush strokes.

The artist behind this is american brooklyn born and raised graffiti fanatic Jean-Michel Basquiat.

Types of sound that relate to the picture;

  • Scrapping
  • Voice in background
  • Brush strokes
  • Tin cans
  • Sweeping
  • birds in the trees
  • cars doors/ engines
  • Phone ringing/ old ringtone
  • footsteps
  • Spray can
  • Bones

Reflection Filming Days

The first week of film was pretty good although we did come into a few problems like most shoots do but we quickly found other ways to overcome them. The first scene we shot was scene 3 where the character was having a hard time sleeping after the accident a few weeks ago, because at time the room was dark we had lighting to help set the mood for the scene so it wasn't blue we wanted it slightly warmish. We were quite limited in the room when it came to using different camera angles due to the fact we had two light positioned in the room meaning we could not move them around or it would of caused shadows in places we didn't want.

Exposure was another area that became an issue, many time some scenes were really over exposed causing us to re shoot the wholes days footage which was a pain but a good learning experiences at the same time and helpful for future references.

Reflection Locations

Opening scene of film will be character leaving the shop

Small side side road of housing where the accident will take place.

Music store scene
Sleeping scene a fews weeks after he has recovered from physically recovered from accident

Blogs about the traumatic event

End scene where he meets unknown person

Reflection Film Pre-production

The Recovery Project

The seven final groups have been selected for our film reflection, I have chosen to take part and work on Andre's idea of how your memories are precious things to hold on to with three other members, Ulysses, Dowan and Chole. We have all spoken about the different roles we would like to take part in, I have chosen to be camera operator/production editor, the reason behind my choice of role is I enjoy using and finding new ways to set up or position an image to help portray a scene in a specific way. Along side that I am very keen in developing my editing skills and believe that this particular project will help me find news ways to showcase it.

As being camera operator for the first part of this project I wanted to look into the key responsibilities that I would have to undergo when perfoming this task and found a helpful piece written about it which include;

  • a good sense of visual composition, perspective and movement
  • physical co-ordination and strength
  • ability to combine creativity with technical skills
  • precise attention to detail
  • effective communication skills
  • ability to collaborate, and to work as part of a team
  • diplomacy and sensitivity when working with artists and crew
  • knowledge of the requirements of the relevant Health and Safety legislation and procedures.

When filming a past project I found that i really enjoyed on set observing the natural surrounds and coming up of ways we could use it in the film to add production value to make it seem visually interesting. Especially the fact this current project is the sole purpose of the film and paying attention to small detail could be a key area.

We had a small quick meeting just to discuss about our roles and things we should be looking into and anything really that could help bring the film together nicely. I looked into frame rate of a camera just came across it and thought i should write down a few notes that might be helpful for future references.

Annes Feedback

Reflection Feedback for film

Yesterday we had a feedback session with Anne about our current film project, from the feedback that was given she really seemed keen of the idea and outlook of the film.

So of the things said were about how our ideas of the use of sound and text could make it a powerful film.

The framing of the scenes were well set up for possible text in certain scenes.

The fact that we kept the piece simple and used people within the group as casting members to keep the continuous flow of work with no set backs.

However we did come across a problem to do with sound in one of our scenes, where we had music playing in the background whilst characters were speaking. She also suggested for future references if we are going to have music playing the background preferably a non speaking one to make sure that it was not a none hit song ( at the time we had Otis Redding playing in the background ).

Time Art - Final idea

Illusion of Time

The area i have looked into for this project of ' Time Art' is Time and space and the illusion behind it.

I found a very helpful and interesting science documentary about the illusion of time and Albert Einsteins unique discovery behind it. You would think that because 'time' consumes and runs a large part of our life that all clocks would tick the same for everyone and everywhere, but that is not the case lets say that every, one person in the world has there own personal clock. Depending if a person is not moving they would be classed as moving through time, but if that person the begins to move they would be know to be moving through time and space because there previous their previous motion through time is being diverted into there motion of space. (In other words Time itself moves slowly for the person that is moving through space).

I whilst whilst watching the this i wrote a few key sentences that would help me understand the link between Space and Time.

  •  Motion effects the passage of time
  • Every moment in time already exists
  • Time runs at different rate individually ( if motion is added)
  • Time and space are linked
  • Time is simply an Illusion

Motion is added into the equation of 'now' it does not exist

List of things that represent now

  • Banging my toe
  • Phone ringing
  • Kangaroo jumping
  • Car stopping at traffic lights
  • Dropping a cup of tea

Think of that segment of being a now point and the loaf of bread Time and Space

The area of time and space that i would like to cover is about the past, present and future and how it can be interpreted as an illusion. The same way a roll of film exists through each moment, time can also be applied in the same way be it past, present or future. Using the three separate screens i think will help the piece to come alive, as each screen will display a moment in time passing through the screens. As the separate clips pass through the screens it will become an on going sequence to show the flow already locked in time. So it almost becomes the question ' is there a past, present or future.

Separate moments in time

Reflection Memories [2]

I been plotting down a number of ideas that i could use for my Reflection photography project and have finally come to some conclusion of what i would like my work to be based around. Before this idea i had a number of other ideas, one that consisted of revisiting old photos of myself and reenacting that event with my present self, but then as i thought about the idea more i realised that, yes i may have a few photos in mind that could be possible reenactments but would it be identical to each other is were i came to a halt.

This was one out of the five pictures i was planning to revisit, I asked my mom what she thought about the idea and although she liked it reminded me that i do not have the same soft toys in that picture anymore and at that point i had to come up with another concept.

I then moved onto an idea that revolved around old toys and new toys of todays generation and they are all some way or the other smart electronic device instead of a simple box of legos or even just a toy car. idea behind that was to use the series of five photos to show a development in time, the different  ways in which children's toys have evolved through time and what each individual looking at the photo would identify the toys they would of enjoyed playing with. But yet again this became a problem due to the facts i wanted toys from all different eras in time to show the development in products.

How children so young are being exposed to this constant development in new technology and are the majority of the time interacting with things through a screen.

Toys i grew up playing with 'Lego'

Old fashioned toys

You can see how this may cause a problem in terms of visiting and researching the numerous distinctive toys. whilst going through this selection process i realised that my ideas resorted around the issue of change and the development of objects.  So i decided to look into how our lives have changed through the digital age of technology and thought the subject of smart phones might be a good way to come about this. I have come up with the idea of showing how our phones are able to produce many different task that we once had to use separately i.e. Camera, alarm clock, internet etc.

what i plan on doing is displaying all the these various functions on the screen along side having the more traditional object next to it, for example having the iphone map app displayed next to an A-Z booklet.

Something along the lines of this but through a series of 5 pictures
Development through the ages
Do Smart phone Apps priorities are daily activities

Memories pitch (Lucid Dreaming)

Lucid Dreaming

This idea came to me after looking into different directors and previous films they had done, which i had not seen before and i came across Christopher Nolan and saw a interview he did for his film inception. He talks about is experience with lucid dreaming and where the idea for the film came from.

This caught my attention very quickly so i decided to investigate into the subject and found that a number of people all over the internet were sharing there own experiences of lucid dreaming and how to do it.

Lucid Dreaming takes place whilst your sleeping and becomes lucid once you are aware that you are inside a dream. It plays a huge role on your subconscious which is when your unaware of the current situation i.e. dreaming. When your dreaming everything you  see and hear around you is a product of yourself i.e Friends, family, favourite foods etc.

I came across this video on youtube which was very helpful in building the concept for my short film and different ideas she spoke about the different stages of Lucid and how to stay inside of the dream once you become aware of it.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5g3YBXyvXSo&list=WLMvgJ6KBm6TrArGAX5-XHJaXqTpjWTQBq

Whilst exploring this idea i took down as many notes that could possibly help me bring this idea to life.

Stephen LaBerge's book "Exploring the World of Lucid Dreaming." Was a very interesting read so much so he even managed to get me to start writing down experiences from my dreams, heres a paragraph fhis book whic i thought was very insightful.

'The world of lucid dreams provides a vaster stage than ordinary life for almost anything
imaginable, from the frivolous to the sublime. You could, if you chose, revel at a saturnalian
festival, soar to the stars, or travel to mysterious lands. You could join those who are testing
lucid dreaming as a tool for problem solving, self-healing, and personal growth. Or you could
explore the implications of teachings from ancient traditions and re-Ports from modern
psychologists that suggest that lucid dreams can help you find your deepest identity—who you
really are'.

This is a brief layout of my story and how i set to go about it.
