Studio Shoot Evaluation (Group B)

We where set a task as a group to create an idea that could be used as a showreel to represent our DFSA course for the new students attending. We brought together an idea which was about, a DFSA student who had been thrown into jail for being too creative. At this point we need to produce a story that reflected how interesting and exciting the course was and developed the idea of the character breaking free, into the creative world of DFSA. We planned to build a wall of TVs in the creative world that displayed all the past and present work of previous students. Set design was a key part of this project as we would be build along with designing the set as a group.

I was originally given the role as grip along with nick, but later was offered the role of sound design due to a re-arrangement of roles.  Although the film we were making did not require much microphone dialog I still had to collect other forms of secondary audio such as;


  • Footsteps
  • Rustling of paper
  • Objects being thrown 
  • Characters body responses i.e. breathing, hands, body movements etc
  • Room tone
  • bricks falling 
Post-production involved putting together the sounds collected into a sequence that could be played alongside the footage. The final video footage was missing audio from certain scenes where the internal mic on the camerae was not on, whilst the boom mic was not needed. Foley sounds needed to be recorded and collected so they could be placed in the sound edit for the video. Searching for a soundtrack was quite troublesome, my approach to the piece was finding a track that had a similar style sonically to the footage. I had found two main soundtracks for possible usage called 'Away' by Igor Dvorkin and 'Brink' by Fesliyan studios.  

Away, was the deciding track for me because of how the emotions developed alongside one another through both the music and the footage. Unfortunately the sound edit I had produced was not used in the final screening. 
After reviewing the final footage at the screening, I feel the changes made to the footage at the end was a good decision. With it originally ending with the character just crawling through the wall and ending. This i believed helped give the audience watching, a better understanding of what was happening within the story.

What I am planning to do with this part of the project is to examine the Rough edit and determine what sounds and music goes where. Nick has already indicated what area within the edit needs sound, so I am going to go through the clips and notes down what sections need either music, foley or sound

Rough Edit Notes


  • Opening scene - Character gets thrown into Jail (scene). Foley Sound - Create jail door slamming
  • Walking around angry scene - Atmosphere dark mood, frustration sounding music.
  • Breaks through Wall Scene - Build up of tension whilst breaking through /Brick foley sounds needed/ characters breathing.
  • Enters through wall scene - The ambients needs to represent uncertainty and Curiosity, there almost needs to be an on going underground droning sounds possible.   


  • TV Scene - Static sounds that will make the audience feel uncomfortable.

Dance Video Brief

Dance Brief

Project Brief

I will be creating a short dance video based around the area of body & movement and how it is able to create unique forms, using individual parts of the body then bringing them all together to create one whole movement. The style of dance I have chosen to use is called ‘Tutting’ it uses parts of the body to create geometric positions and movements to create a desired angles.


Dancers Role
                       
I would need a dancer that can creatively, from the given audio track develop a routine that displays through either body/hand techniques. As this will not be a typical shot Tutting video where the dancer is captured from only one angle. Meaning the dancer must be willing to go through the movements a number of times, as capturing a range of different camera angles is an important area of this film.

There will be a set date where I would like the dancer to come in prior to the shooting date so we both have an understanding of how things will play out on the actual day. If dancer has any additional ideas they might think help increase the film further, please do not be afraid to speak up any advise would helpful.


Shooting Dates

The final shooting date will take place on the 22nd of April, prior to that there will be a preparation studio session on the . This will consist of going through the different steps of choreography and the introduction of one another.



                       
Location

The University of Creative Arts is the location of where the film will take place.
Falkner Road, Farnham, Surrey GU9 7DS.
The entirety the shoot will take place in the film studio (Room G28). There will be periods during the shoot where breaks will be taken, within a separate room as eating foods and drinks will not be permitted whilst on set for safety reason.
